Development of Techniques for Raising Deodar (Cedrus deodara) Plantations through Tall Plants.

Achievements:

• Deodar wilding as readymade planting material cannot be established as a viable technique for plantation programmes in the present study.
• urther, the tall wilding brought to nursery for stabilization under congenital condition could not produce any dent in further exploring the possibility of this technique to use wilding of bigger sizes for the production of plants in the nursery.
• Generally, the production of tall plants in the nursery could be done either as bare root or in containerized production system. In the present study, keeping the cost of production in view it was decided to blend the two production systems for better survival and cost effectiveness. Firstly, the Deodar was raised as bare root stock in nursery beds for two & half years and then transplanted into gunny bags (as containerized system) for further one or two years before out planting in the field.
• For production of tall plant in the nursery firstly the Deodar stock should be raised as bare root stock for 2.5 years in nursery beds and subsequently transplanted in gunny bags during rainy season. The plants should be kept in shade house (50% shade) and also moderately pruned (50% of lower branches) at the time of transplanting for better survival. Application of 20 ml/ plant Vermiwash during March to May at 15 days interval will further enhance the growth of Deodar plants in the nursery.
